“Kyrie” and Mutual Salutation – page 70

Collect:

Almighty God, whose people are knit together in one holy Church,

the mystical Body of your Son, grant us grace to follow your blessed saints

in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared

for those who love you; through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Reader: A Reading from Revelation 7:9-17

After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, singing, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen." Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?" I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

 All: Thanks be to God

Psalm 34:1-0, & v. 22

I WILL alway give thanks unto the LORD; / his praise shall ever be in my mouth.
My soul shall make her boast in the LORD; / the humble shall hear thereof and be glad.
O praise the LORD with me, / and let us magnify his Name together.
I sought the LORD, and he heard me; / yea, he delivered me out of all my fears.
O look unto him and be lightened; / and your faces shall not be ashamed.
This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him; / yea, and saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the LORD tarrieth round about them that fear him, / and delivereth them.
O taste and see how gracious the LORD is: / blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
O fear the LORD, ye that are his saints; / for they that fear him lack nothing.
The lions do lack, and suffer hunger; / but they who seek the LORD shall want no manner of thing that is good.

The LORD delivereth the souls of his servants; / and all they that put their trust in him shall not be destitute.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Reader: A Reading from the First Letter of John -  1 John 3:1-3

See what love the Father has given us that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

Presider : The Lord be with you.

All: And with thy spirit.

Presider: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Matthew 5:1-12

All: Glory be to thee, O Lord.

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.".

For those participating from home, Please respond in the appropriate places, as indicated in the Book of Common Prayer. The Celebrant gives voice to the prayer alone, on behalf of the congregation. However, the “responses” at the appropriate moments, and especially the “Amen” at the end of the Prayer of Consecration are vital for the people to offer.

The reason the responses, and especially the “Amen”, is important, is to assist in receiving what is called “Spiritual Communion”. According to the Book of Common Prayer, anyone who believes the Prayer of Consecration, and that the bread is truly the Body of Christ, and that the wine is truly the Blood of Christ receives all the benefits of Holy Communion, without actually physically receiving the elements themselves. This belief is signified by saying “Amen” to the Prayer, and when the bread and wine are received by the Priest.  In this respect, the Priest receives Communion on behalf of the people. “Spiritual Communion” is to be used in extenuating circumstances only – which this time certainly is.

Again, at the receiving of bread and wine, the people respond “Amen.”

Missions to Seafarers Shoe Box Campaign 2020

It is again time for the Shoe Box Campaign at the Mission To Seafarers . As part of a worldwide network of Anglican sponsored Missions, the Halifax Mission offers seafarers help and support when their ships arrive in port. This year during the pandemic there are ships in the harbour carrying seafarers who have not left their ships for eight or nine months due to quarantines placed on them.

The Mission people are working hard to reach out to these folks with small gifts and with help to contact their loved ones.

Shoe Boxes can be picked up at the back of the church if you would like to participate. There is a list of suggested items but you are welcome to put together whatever you see fit.

We will deliver the boxes on Dec.1 so would like to have them in before that date. ITEMS: mittens/gloves, scarves/toques, socks, tooth brush and paste, shaving foam/disposable razors, nail clippers, deodorant, shampoo, body wash, soap/facecloth, lip balm/hand lotion, playing cards/game, pen/pencil, Nova Scotia/Canada souvenir, post card/signed Christmas card, small unbreakable ornament, bagged candy(no chocolate).

St. Stephens Plum Puddings 2020

A plan has been developed and given approval by St. Stephen’s Parish Council to make Plum Puddings in November 2020.  As with most everything else in 2020, the process for making Plum Puddings will need adjusted to address all COVID-19 guidelines.  In order to do this, volunteers will be needed to assist at every step.  This initial email is to ask you to consider the steps below and indicate with which ones you would be able to assist.

1.   Pre-Ordering Plum Puddings – By getting orders in advance we will know exactly how many puddings to make.  There will be few if any extra puddings after we are finished so anyone wanting one will definitely need to pre-order.

We need volunteers to place calls – we have a list of some of our previous buyers already – and volunteers to reach beyond this list to    We also hope individuals will help to reach beyond this list and contact friends and acquaintances with whom they work, their friends, neighbours, book club, exercise group, etc. in an effort to expand orders.  These calls will be made as soon as possible so all orders can be in by Wednesday, November 4th.

2.  Pre-Measuring Ingredients - Ingredients (flour, nuts, raisins, etc.) will be pre-measured, parchment circles for bottom of tins pre-cut, aluminum foil cut, ribbon cut and cards folded and hole punched with ribbon inserted.  Volunteers are needed to do this work in their own homes, in their own time.  Items will be delivered to your home, along with instructions on the task at hand, early in the week of November 9th to be completed before the end of the week

3.  Mixing Batter & Steaming Puddings – This will be done in 3 or 4 homes with larger kitchens.  A small group of 2 or 3 volunteers in each home will mix the puddings, prepare tins with Pam and the parchment insert, fill and cover tins and wash up.  Volunteers are needed to assist.

4.  Preparing Cooked Puddings for Sale – the steamed Plum Puddings will be taken to Tuck Hall, where well-separated tables will be set-up to permit a larger group of people to sit socially-distanced, all wearing masks, to wrap and decorate the Plum Puddings before they are sold.  Volunteers will be needed to help complete this work.

5.  Delivering of Finished Plum Puddings – A large portion of the completed Plum Puddings will need to be delivered by car to the purchaser(s).  Some Plum Puddings will be picked up at St. Stephen’s.  Volunteers will be needed to drive and to sit at the Parish Community Centre to sell the Plum Puddings

Anyone willing to assist with any steps in this process are asked to get in touch with Gretchen - by return email, or by phoning 902-275-4058 (home) or 902-275-7646 (cell).

If you can think of someone who might be interested in helping out, please pass these details along to them.

We can do this ..... we can enjoy the process and have fun .... and with your assistance, we’ll do it all in a safe manner.

(You may well receive this notice again through St. Stephen’s email distribution list.  Apologies for the duplication.)
